11/22/2023 0 Comments Visualize an apple![]() ![]() I do have visual dreams that I sometimes remember. If I think about a sensation I've felt strongly before, like hugging friends before moving away, I can sometimes feel the sensation of that memory buy I'm not able to see my friend's faces along with that. I'm consciously aware of what the house looked like and I can describe it, but I'll never see what it looks like unless I find a photo or go back to visit. But I hqve no visual frame of reference in my head. I have trouble daydreaming or focusing on memories and often have to put a lot of work into concentrating which I think is partially caused by the lack of visuals for my brain to think about, so I try to recall details about that memory.įor example, if I try to imagine my childhood home my brain recalls details about it : painted white, two story, two car garage, the types of plants in the front yard, etc. I only see the back of my eyelids so very dark, depending on my surroundings I might see some shapes of the light coming through but no concrete outlines or images whatsoever. I think what happens when I think of a strong memory is that my brain kind of goes through a file system of what I remember about it. Oh, and tell your sister that it really are pictures and not just locations and colors described in words □ Im sorry if I said something that you see as bad/wrong/or worded badly. ![]() I can control it, but the process happens automatically.Īlso, something interesting that I have seen (it definitely doesnt have to be true) is that a lot of people with aphantasia do something with art. When I visualize I can sort of "choose" what I want to make like getting a memory, but I can also change it fast the way I want to without thinking about every single mini-part. Its like it automatically gets filtered the way you want to. When you remember something from a specific moment you dont go through a lot of information consciously until you found the memory. (I assume lol) You know it when the shapes and information are that of an apple and know it when its a weird shape for an apple, which means that its somewhere in your brain. I dont have aphantasia myself and I just want to say that Im not really consciously thinking about all the details when I visualize. ![]() But every person has a unique brain and vocabulary so it's tough to compare. For me, I have dreams with visuals that look realistic but cannot visualize that way while conscious so on some level I do think there is some validity to aphantasia. I don't think there will ever be a pure answer considering it's impossible to gather a baseline of what visual imagination really is. Also, from what I can tell, references are used a lot in many artistic fields, in which case internal visualization isn't needed either. If you have muscle memory to draw a circle, you don't need to be able to visualize it to draw it. It's interesting to me because if that's the case and it is more common to not be able to visualize with eyes closed then is aphantasia really the base "normal" or possibly doesn't exist at all? I have a few friends that say they can imagine things with clarity akin to looking at a photograph but maybe that just means they are able to remember and recall a greater amount of detail than I can.įor art, I really think it comes down to commitment and practice more than anything.
